ThinkTime Creations has introduced yet another inspired Polaroid app into the Apple iTunes store. First came Instant: The Polaroid Maker for Mac OS, followed by the imaginative iPad app called Instant: The Polaroid Instant Photos. And now the iPhone 5 has got its own optimized version of the popular Polaroid app with Instant: The Polaroid Instant Camera app. From start to finish, the app allows users to live the entire experience of shooting and developing an image via the old Polaroid technique.
On launching the app for the first time, you won’t be asked to create an account which is a relief since very few apps don’t require you to sign up these days. You also don’t have to make any in-app purchases as all the image effects and features are included in the main price. As the name suggests, the app allows you to instantly begin creating Polaroid versions of your images.
You can select a picture from your photo album or fire up Instant’s in-app camera. The interface of the camera is reminiscent of old Polaroid cameras. The screen of the app turns into a camera back with a square shaped viewfinder in the middle. Keeping with the simplicity of the times the only camera option available to you is to turn the flash on, off or on automatic.
True to its retro style, the app leisurely processes and slides a square shaped image inside a white outline down the top of the screen. Then you have to ‘develop’ the image by shaking your iPhone just like you’d shake a Polaroid snap straight out of an SX-70. You can however set how quickly you want the image to appear. You can then take your pick from over 30 vintage filters including 10 that are spot on digital replicas of original Polaroid images and even control micro features like emulsion, vignette, grain and intensity. You can also add text underneath the image or change the color of the white outline of the image to one of the 30 colors available.
The app has excellent social media integration allowing you to instantly share your newly created Polaroid pictures on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Flickr or via email. The app however lacks a web view of images when sent via email. If you have an Instagram app installed on your iPhone then you can upload your images there as well. Uploads to the popular Chinese microblogging site, Sina Weibo are also supported by Instant: The Polaroid Instant Camera app.
The app comes with a price tag of $1.99 which seems a bit overpriced by usual standards. But since there’s no other app at the moment that offers an experience similar to this one the high price tag is not likely to come in the app’s way. Although the app is optimized for the fifth generation iPhone, it is also available for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S as well as iPod Touch and iPad and available for download from the iTunes App store.
