In the year 1919, Nikon came out with their Nikon D1 SLR and then in the year 1991, they created the first digital SLR’s and it was for the NASA. In the year 2008, Nikon D90 was launched by the company as the first SLR that can record the videos.
Canon, in the year 1965 launched their Canon Pellix as an SLR camera that has semitransparent mirror. The first camera with the micro computer in the world was launched by Canon in the year 1976 and it was known as AE-1. In 1992, EOS 5 which was the first camera with eye controlled AF was launched by Canon and then in the year 2005 the company came out with the first high definition video camcorder.
If we consider the region wise sales of Canon in the year 2011 in terms of millions of Yen then Europe stands at 1,113,065 which is followed by America at 961,955. Then comes Asia & Ocean and Japan with 787,963 and 694,450 respectively.
The region wise sales of Nikon for the year 2011 in America stand at 237853 millions of yen. The figures of Europe, Japan and others in millions of yen stand at 203240, 126914 and 222765 respectively.
Considering the range of products, Cannon is known for its wide range including portable flash, cameras, printers, film projectors, electronic dictionaries, multifunction peripheral/digital copiers and calculators. Nikon besides camera are known for its film scanners, rifle scopes, binoculars, steppers/scanners, laser rangefinders, spotting scopes and microscopes.
If we consider the global market shares of the year 2010 then Canon with 19.6 billion is ahead of Nikon that has share of 6.7 billion. If we see the worldwide market shares of digital camera by vendor in the year 2010 then the list is topped by Canon with 19 followed by Sony with 17.9. Nikon holds 12.6, Samsung 11.1, Kodak 7.4, Panasonic 7.6, Olympus 6.1 and Fuji and Casio at 4.9 each. Pentax, Vivitar and others have a share of 1.5, 1.2 and 6.7 respectively.
